Looking over your list, I feel remiss to have not dug deeper into either Anhedonist or Gaza, two bands who from your descriptions I oughta love.
i have literally not a heard a single album in your top 10. but there was more significant overlap further down your list.

Yeah, shit. I haven't listened to anything in your top 10, either, except for listening to a few tracks from that Wood of Ypres and not coming back to it. Have spent some time with two of the records in your 11-25, though.
ReplyDeleteMy year-end list is a very literal translation of listening habits for the year (and thereby an unfiltered reflection of my strange taste). When I turned on music these were the albums I was most likely to spin, straight-up. Every single one of my top 10 albums came via promo, so my listening habits are definitely getting weirder with wider exposure. I do have to say that Dark Descent records really had an amazing year, surpassing Profound Lore for out-of-left-field awesomeness.
ReplyDelete@Chris, that's a very interesting list. I'm still trying to figure out why that Serpentine Path album didn't resonate with me. There are definitely a couple there I haven't heard (Cardiac Arrest, Ævangelist). I feel compelled to explain to people why I didn't dig the new Asphyx album, but I don't have an adequate explanation yet; still haven't quantified it.
@Andrew, I've realized that I consider January to be grindcore month; after I read your year-end list I end up catching up on a load of albums I missed (as noted in my blurb for this piece). Case in point: The Kill! I won't take offense to you calling this "mainstream" metal. I know you really mean "genres other than grindcore." ;)
As for not having heard anything in the top 10, if nothing else, I'd recommend giving Pallbearer a spin; it's really an amazing album (and it's popping up all over the place). I know that Woods of Ypres are (were) a straight up love 'em or hate 'em band (obviously I'm in the love camp), so I can't expect much in the way of consensus. Also, each and every one of you should love the shit out of Gaza. Get on that.
